Creative Enterprise Network :: www.creative-enterprise-network.com

Creative enterprises can sometimes be funded by raising small amount of money from lots of people.

Read the blog about 'Crowd-Financing' to fund a film, by selling film credits - and how Fiona Maher raised funds by selling bit parts in her film on eBay.

I'm interested to know what you think about this approach, and how it works for certain types of creative businesses. I'm especially interested to hear from creative entrepreneurs who have raised finance in this way.

Trust Art is a project which will commission ten public art works, crowd-financed by members of the public who can become 'shareholders' with an investment of as little as $1 (1 USD) - or more. This investment is structured legally as a gift, not an investment, in order to avoid complicated investment legislation. However the donors and artists enter into a social contract to create public wealth and share private profits.

Thanks to Jo Wingate from Sensoria festival of film and music for telling me about this funding site:

Kickstarter describes itself as "a funding platform for artists, designers, filmmakers, musicians, journalists, inventors, explorers...."

Check it out and let us know what you think.

The May 2010 UK edition of Wired magazine has some more examples of crowd-financing for creative businesses and projects:

Spanish film 'The Cosmonaut' has raised over 30,000 Euros from 1,827 'producers' using thecosmonaut.org.

Justin Tellian's art project The Dreamers is using trustart.org to raise 90,000 USD.

Musician Maria Schneider raised 170,000 USD for her latest album Sky Blue using artistshare.com

Designer Georgette Williams is using catwalkgenius.com

Journalist Lindsey Hoshaw used spot.us to raise 10,000 USD to write a report.

Kickstarter is mentioned again too.

Here's another crowd-sourcing website worth looking at.
Grow VC is mentioned in this article on Springwise.

South African singer Verity raised finance for her first album by asking people to purchase it in advance.
2,000 people from 25 countries signed up, which gave her the investment for production.
After her first album 'Journey', it looks like she's doing the same thing for her second album 'Yet to Be'.
There's a list of future owners on her website iamverity.com.

I thought that you mightt be interested to hear of a new crowd funding website + retail shop that will open in September called the Tribe. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/aug/22/social-networking-tr...

As a business adviser I would be really interested to hear of people who have successfully raised money through crowd funding. PS I have got no commercial or other interest in the company above, I am just very interested in the phenomenon of crowd funding.
